Oil on canvas. This painting process began with the creation of an abstract painting where I channelled my emotions and reactions to the Toronto lockdown (one of the longest lockdowns in the world). After multiple layers of paint were built up, I began to remove the paint. Through this process of stripping away the layers of paint a critical realization emerged in my mind: women were grappling with the lockdown in ways that were astounding. Whether caretakers juggling ill relatives, jobs, and homeschooled children or nurses on the front line or domestic abuse survivors waiting for a moment to break free, these women were the face of the lockdown. As I looked at the canvas I began to see a new image of a woman. Using oil paints I pulled the image forward to create the painting you see here.
